Air-cooled heat exchangers are an important part of industrial technology in the field of heat transfer. Among the different types of heat exchangers used in various industries for cooling or heating fluids, plate heat exchangers have a special place. Plate heat exchangers have a wider scope of influence than other exchangers due to their specific advantages such as high efficiency and flexibility, low heat losses and maintenance costs, easy cleaning and compactness, which has led to many efforts in the field of research and development of plate heat exchangers.
In this paper, in order to increase the heat transfer performance of a plate-fin heat exchanger using a vortex generator (Eddy), changes in the geometric shape of the fins and changes in the direction of the heat exchanger plates have been investigated. When the fluid flow passes through the vortex generator, due to the flow separation at the edge of the vortex generator, vortices are generated in the flow direction in the flow field, which causes mixing in the bulk of the flow and changes in the boundary layer and its instability. In this study, heat transfer in a finned plate heat exchanger has been simulated and calculated numerically using Converge Studio software. Among the turbulence models, the k-ɛ model has been used, which provides better results, and its results have been compared with a sample of plate heat exchangers that have been designed and manufactured. By changing the geometric shape of the fins and changing the direction of the heat exchanger plates, the change in the air flow regime passing through the heat exchanger plates has been investigated. The results show that in the Reynolds number range of 1965324 with a hot air inlet temperature of 616 degrees Kelvin and a cold air inlet temperature of 222 degrees Kelvin at an altitude of 10,000 feet above sea level, an efficiency of 52 percent has been achieved.
